George Guest-Owner/Drum Teacher

George Guest began "playing around" on his father's (George Guest Sr.) metallic-blue Slingerland drumset at a very young age in the mid 1970's. Listening to his father's band practice in the basement kindled a lifelong obsession with playing the drums and learning about music.

George's first official drum lessons were with Carl Masciantonio the great former band director at Jeannette District Schools. Studying with "Mr. Mash" gave George the drive to learn as much as he could about drumming and music history in general. George uses a charismatic approach to share the benefits of drumming with friends, collegues, and students.

During his time in grammar school, George played in the school Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Percussion Ensemble. Always looking for more experience, George gained valuable experience playing with groups outside of the school like various drum and baton corps and "garage bands" with friends.

George marched in the IUP Marching Band from 1992-1996; he served as Percussion Caption Head in 1995 and was a music arranger from 1994-1996. During his time with the IUP Band, he also instructed and consulted drumlines for several area high school bands.

One thing that makes Mr. Guest a unique drum teacher is that he has extensive experience working with small children. In addition to private teaching, George also teaches classes at JCC Squirrel Hill for small children and toddlers. Also, Mr. Guest conducts drum classes at several area recreation and daycare centers.

George Guest also has a strong track record of successful students. As a private teacher, George has helped students get into the Berklee College of Music, Indiana Unversity School of Music program
(Bloomington), Chicago University School of Music, Indiana University of PA School of Music, and other programs. In fact, several drum instructors and high school drumline instructors in the Western Pa. area are past students of Mr. Guest.

George studied extensively with Brian West, who is a Percussion Professor at Texas Christian University. He also studied Jazz Drum Set with Woody Williams, who is a Jazz Professor at Georgia State University. With over 30 years of experience, George performs with a few local funk and jazz bands. George lives in Edgewood with his wife.
